The scene depicted in doll display is Putrakamesti, which is a special Yagna performed for the sake of progeny.

During the Treta Yuga, King Dasharatha presided over the kingdom of Ayodhya, and had three wives named Kausalya, Sumitra and Kaikeyi. He had no progeny born to them and was anxious to give an heir to his kingdom. The royal preist, sage Vasishta and Vibandaka Maharishi’s son, Rishya Shringa, advised and helped the king to perform the Putrakamesti Yagna so as to beget a fitting scion for the throne. After the ceremony deity God Agni appeared from the flames of the sacrificial fire and presented a golden vessel of diving Payasam for King Dasharatha to distribute among his queens. Having consumed the payasam, time passed and king Dasharatha finally had sons he so desired. Kausalya gave birth to Rama, Kaikeyi to Bharatha and Sumitra gave birth to twind Lakshmana and Shatrughna.

Dasara is a special ocassion there is invariably some programme got up to connect directly to the festival. Aptly a doll show, depicting the central scene as mentioned abovethe speciality being the dramatization fo the scene with life size dolls, completely with glossy attire and royal backdrop.

Smt.Anu Visweswar an ardent lover of dolls, and a veteran in getting up thematic traditional doll shows the giant sized exhibit. Smt.Anu stitching the costumes herself, using pure silk and Kanjeevaram fabrics, flowing tissue and brocade forming the backdrop for the tabelau, repainting the faces of the 200 year old dolls which is a family heirloom and intricate hairdos. Only the jewellery has been soursed from outside. This true work of love is in the Dasara spirit of continuing the hoary tradition.
