Malala Alla – Kannada Play

January 9, 2017

Malala Alla
Kannada Play
by Jamboo Theatre Company, Sagara

PlayWright: Bolwar Mohammad Kunhi
Director: Chidambara Rao Jambe

As the playwright, Bolwar, notes, this play is definitely not about the 14-year-old noble laureate, Malala, who was born in Swat, a valley between Afghanistan and Pakistan. There is no direct connection between the play and her life. Malala’s story is a means to unravel the hypocrisies of male authorities, who are shouting the slogans of women’s education and empowerment in the public platforms, but remain fundamentalists in the domestic realm, behind the closed doors. The play explores the female subject position in the web of cultural politics which systematically subjugate women in the guise of liberation. Thus, the journey of the play is towards understanding the layers of women’s true identity.
