February 10, 2017

As part of the 15th East West Music and Dance Encounter 2017, The Bangalore School of Music is proud to present `Simply Schubert’, its very own male-voice ensemble, `The Bangalore Men’ in concert, featuring Jonas Olsson ((Sweden/India), Natallia Kapylova(Belarus/India) and acclaimed Swedish mezzo-soprano Ms Maria Forsström (Sweden).

Simply Schubert is an eclectic mix of flowing male-choruses, tender and dramatic lieder and sparkling piano solos, showcasing the musical genius of Franz Schubert, through some of his most beloved choruses for male choir, such as Vier Gesänge, Ständchen (with mezzo-soprano solo) and Der 23rd Psalm, together with immortal lieder such as Ave Maria, Erlkönig, Gretchen am Spinnrade and pieces from Schwanengesang.

About The Bangalore Men – an all-male voices ensemble launched in January of 2016 consists of 15 singers, all with many years of previous experience singing in choirs. The group focuses on western classical music, from eras ranging from medieval music to contemporary, and is conducted by Jonas Olsson, voice faculty at Bangalore School of Music. The winter season of 2016 saw a program of classical a cappella music performed in Bangalore and Pondicherry. The group is affiliated with The Bangalore School of Music, and is coached by Maria Forsström (Sweden). Simply Schubert is the group’s tribute to the romantic music of Franz Schubert, and has so far seen performances in Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mysore and Goa.

About Maria Forsström is known for her extremely intelligent musicianship and her strong communicative abilities, being equally at ease in a Lieder recital as in the concert repertoire and on the opera stage. Her deep knowledge about style and source reading makes her both the ideal Baroque or Rossini singer, as well as an interpreter of the late Romantic and modern composers. Her vast repertoire spans a wide spectrum, which includes all the standard alto/mezzo orchestra, lieder, oratorio and opera parts, such as Brahms’ Alto Rhapsody and the St. Matthew Passion, which she has performed several times to great critical acclaim. Her latest engagement was the role of Maffio Orsini in Donizetti’s opera Lucrezia Borgia at the Malmö Opera, Sweden. Maria Forsström has performed with L’Orchestra dell’Accademia di Santa Cecilia, Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie, Hiroshima Symphony Orchestra, the Wroclaw Symphony Orchestra, La Chambre Philharmonique, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra and Musica Aeterna, Perm, Russia.

About Jonas Olsson started his singing education in the Gothenburg Boys’ Choir, Sweden, and continued with singing studies at the Gothenburg Conservatory, simultaneously studying music theory and music history. He has participated in many of Sweden’s best renowned choirs both as soloist and as choir singer. He continues to be coached by Ms Maria Forsström, one of Scandinavia’s most sought after vocal coaches and mezzo-sopranos. A resident of Bangalore for many years, since September 2015 Jonas has been a teacher at The Bangalore School of Music, where he also leads The Bangalore Men.
