at BSM’s 15th East West Music & Dance Encounter
As part of the 15th East West Music and Dance Encounter 2017, The Bangalore School of Music Presents ‘Jazz Hindustani’, another East-West presentation featuring tabla maestro, Pandit Ravindra Yavagal and troupe, (Kiran Yavagal on tabla, Nayan Yavagal as vocalist and Sir Ranjan Kumar Beura on Hindustani Classical Violin) followed by the German contemporary jazz ensemble, Klaus Graf Jazz Quartet on their India Tour 2017, featuring Klaus Graf – Alto Saxophone, Olaf Polziehn – Piano, Axel Kühn – Bass, Meinhard Obi Jenne – Drums.
Performance by the Klaus Graf Quartet is in association with the Ministry of Arts and Sciences & Jazz Association of Baden-Württemberg and supported by the Consulate General, Federal Republic of Germany, Bengaluru.
The Klaus Graf Quartet repertoire will consist of contemporary jazz original compositions and jazz standards, by the band members, who feature prominently on the list of Germany’s most senior and respected jazz musicians. Alto saxophonist Klaus Graf, leader of the jazz quartet founded in 2001, has performed with Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Phil Woods, Bob Mintzer, Clark Terry and many more. The musicians of the Klaus Graf jazz quartet are internationally recognized jazz soloists and regularly collaborate with different jazz stars.
The music largely consists of his own compositions, which were written to reflect the quartet’s concept of what the music means to them: jazz with a soul character, melody-based and groove-driven. Their debut album, “Changes in Live“ released in 2002, received outstanding critical acclaim, as did the second album “Moving On“.
About Pandit Ravindra Yavagal
Pandit Ravindra Yavagal was initiated into music by his father Late Sri. Ramachandra Yavagal at the age of four, He then continued his training on the tabla with Sri.Veeranna Kamkar of Hubli, and later came under the tutelage of Pandit.Sheshagiri Hanagal a well known tabla artiste from Dharwad belt. Considered to be a child prodigy Pt. Ravindra Yavagal gave his first solo performance at the age of ten at the prestigious Sawai Gandharva Music Festival at Kundagol.
Pandit Yavagal is a “’Top Ranking’”artiste of All India Radio and Post Graduate in music from Indira Kala Vishvavidyalaya-Khairagarh (M.P). Being one of the most sought after tabla players of the country today, he has enthralled the audience through his skillful fingering techniques and creative style which is a result of rigorous training and sincere riyaz. He has been recognized both as a soloist and as a sensitive accompanist.
Being a creative artiste he has been open to the ideas of fusion oriented and experimental music and has thereby shared the concert platform with great maestros of south Indian music like Dr. Balamuralikrishna, Prof. T.N.Krishnan, Sri. Umayalapuram K. Shivaraman, Sri. Guruvayur Dorai, Late Sri. Tanjore Upendran, Sri Yella Venkateshwara Rao… to name a few.
He has been on several concert tours abroad and has successfully performed in countries like the United States of America, France, Egypt, Hong Kong etc. and has been regularly performing on Radio and Television and has participated in many of the most prestigious broadcasts and telecasts such as National Programme of Music, Akashavani Sangeet Sammelan and other media based programmes. He has also given lecture demonstrations on subject of percussion.

He is an able teacher and has been training youngsters in order to share his knowledge with the younger generation; some of them have won prizes in prestigious competitions of Akashvani and many of whom are graded artistes of Akashawani. Presently Pandit Yavagal he is on the staff of All India Radio-Bangalore, as a Selection Grade 1 artiste.
About Kiran Yavagal
Kiran Yavagal, son and disciple of an internationally acclaimed Tabla maestro Pandit Ravindra Yavagal started learning tabla at the tender age of 4. His Maternal grandfather late Sri. Kalidas Bankar was a renowned music teacher in Hubli. Apart from his father, he also learned under Sri M Nagesh, Sri Udayraj Karpur & is presently learning under Pt. Yogesh Samsi. He was also privileged to receive Guidance from His Dada Guru Pt. Sheshagiri Hangal.
A Graded artiste of AIR & Doordarshan, Kiran has performed in many prestigious festivals like Sawai Gandharva festival (Kundgol), Rahimatkhansaheb’s memorial sangeet sammelan(Dharwad), 94th birthday celebration of legendry vocalist Dr. Gangubai Hangal. He has accompanied many top artistes like Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pt. Ullas Bapat, Vid Yella Venkateshwara Rao , Pt. Ronu Majumdar, Pt. Nayan Ghosh, Pt. Vinayak Torvi, Pt. Parameshwara Hegde, Pt. Ajay Pohankar, Pt Rajeev Taranath
About Nayan Yavagal
Son of Pandit Ravindra Yavagal, Nayan Yavagal showed keen interest towards music at the tender age of three by playing Tabala, Bansuri, Harmonium and singing. He started learning Hindusthani Classical Vocal music systematically under noted Hindusthani Vocalist Pt. Raghupathi Hegde for about Ten years. At present, he is under advanced training from Pt. Parameshvara Hegde, who is well known and senior vocalist of India since two years.
Nayan has participated in many children programs of All India Radio, many interschool competitions and won prizes and appreciation. He has been awarded and encouraged with the CCRT scholarship by Govt. of India. He is also a recipient of “Ranga Prapancha national award” by Ranga Prapancha, a monthly magzine and “Vocalist of the year” by Guru Kumara Trust ®. He has performed in the prestigious organisations such as “ Sawai Gandharva festival” Kundagol, “Guru Kumara Trust” Bangalore, “Raaga Sangama” Bangalore etc.
About Ranjan Kumar Beura
Hailing from Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, Ranjan Kumar Beura was introduced at the age of 5, to the realm of music by his musically inclined parents. He has done his graduation and post-graduation in hindutani classical violin from Utkal mahavidyalaya, Bhubaneshwar. The principal flavour of his musical expressions is from the Kirana Gharana style of Hindustani Classical music, which has produced many great musicians such as Bharatratna Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, Dr. Gangubhai Hangal, Pandit Sawai Gandharav, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, Ustad Abdul Waheed Khan etc
His flair for innovation, while maintaining the tradition, has been widely acclaimed by his audiences, whether in India or overseas. He is a New Age violinist, equally at ease in Carnatic, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Irish, Arabic etc. This diverse proficiency combined with his extraordinary ability to bridge the mood of his audience, with his extempore renditions, has made him a favourite among the younger generation. About the Klaus Graf Jazz Quartet
Klaus Graf – alto saxophone – is Professor for jazz-saxophone at the “Musikhochschule Nürnberg”. He studied Jazz at the “Musikhochschule Köln”, and played with the “SWR-Big Band”, “Peter Herbolzheimer RC&B”. Graf has played with some of the formidable names in jazz like Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Phil Collins, Phil Woods, Bob Mintzer, Clark Terry and many more.
Olaf Polziehn – Piano – is one of the most in demand piano players on the European jazz scene. H eis currently Professor for Jazz piano at the “Musikhochschule Graz”, Austria. Polziehn studied Jazz at the “Musikhochschule Köln”. He has played at numerous tours and festivals, for example in the USA and the Baltic states. Played i.a. with Jeff Hamilton, Jimmy Woode, Benny Golson, Al Foster, Scott Hamilton, Patti Austin. Polziehn is winner of the “Tonger Musikwettbewerb”.
Axel Kühn – Bass – Axel Kühn is one of the best, young upright bassists in Germany. He has been conducting his own jazz formation since 2004, which he calls “Kühntett”. He studied at the “Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart”. Kühn has played with “Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion”, Wolfgang Puschnig, Julian and Roman Wasserfuhr, Helen Schneider. Winner of the “Landesjazzpreis Baden-Württemberg” in 2009, “Internationaler Jazzpreis Burghausen” in 2009.
Meinhard Obi Jenne – Drums – has played with Art Farmer, Benny Golson, German Brass, John Hendricks, SWR Big Band, Les McCann, Helen Schneider, Wolfgang Dauner, to name a few. He studied Classic music at the “Musikhochschule Trossingen”, academic at the “Berliner Philharmoniker”, and is co-founder of “The Wright Thing”.
