About the topic
The incredibly difficult scenario in which Gandhi enunciated his Satyagraha, Truth and Non Violence strategy in South Africa in 1906 and the many successes achieved with it by him, and subsequently his followers in various countries, during the twentieth century will be presented in the first part of the talk.

In its second and third parts the main challenges facing humanity in the twenty first century will be listed and how they can be effectively overcome with Gandhi’s Satyagraha and Sarvodaya approaches will be elucidated.

Amb (Retd) Pascal Alan Nazareth

Mr. Nazareth holds a Masters Degree in Economics and Politics from Madras University and joined the Indian Foreign Service in May 1959. He has served in India’s Embassies/High Commissions/Consulates in Tokyo, Rangoon, Lima, London, Accra, Chicago New York, Cairo and Mexico.

Since his retirement in May 1994 he has been much involved in reviving and promoting Gandhian ideals by writing/lecturing about them. Among the prestigious institutions he has lectured at are NIAS, IIMB, BHU, Stanford, Yale, Columbia, Uppsala, Leiden, Humboldt and Heidelberg Universities. He has delivered keynote address at the UN’s International day of Non Violence event in New York in 2012 and at the ‘Dialogue of Civilization’s ‘Culture of Non Violence session at Rhodes (Greece) in 2014.

Ambassador Nazareth’s book “Gandhi’s Outstanding Leadership’, published in 2006, has come out already in twelve Indian and fifteen foreign languages. The Foreword for its six European language editions was written by former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.

His second book, titled ‘Gandhi : Soul Force Warrior who Revolutionized Revolution and Spiritualised it”, is being published by Wisdom Tree, New Delhi and expected to be released in August 2017.

About Justice N Santosh Hegde

Nate Santosh Hegde is a former justice of the Supreme Court of India, former Solicitor General of India and was Lokayukta (ombudsman) for Karnataka. He graduated with a law degree from Government Law College (now known as University Law College), Bangalore in 1965.

Justice Hegde enrolled as an advocate in January 1966 and was appointed Advocate General for the state of Karnataka in 1984, a position he held until 1988. He was appointed the Solicitor General of India in 1998, a judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1999 until retirement in June 2005.

Justice Hegde was appointed Lokayukta of Karnataka State on 3 August 2006 for a term of five years. During this period, his leadership and unbiased approach to all forms of corruption was acclaimed as a model all over the country.
