‘Kreedaa Kaushalya’ Board Games Extravaganza at Mysuru.

April 26, 2017

The traditional games exhibition and sale ‘Kreedaa Kaushalya’ Board Games Extravaganza at Mysuru. is organized by Ramsons Kala Pratishtana (RKP)

India is a veritable treasure house of board games. People across the length and breadth of this culturally diverse country pass their free time in one or the other activity that stimulates brain and thus keep it young and healthy. Playing board games forms the majority of these activities. There are about ten games that are common everywhere but each region has one or two games unique to that area. Bringing all kinds of board games, played across the country under one roof, is a herculean task in itself. A city based art foundation is known for successfully attempting this venture for about a decade now.

From its inception in 2007, Kreedaa Kaushalya has till now introduced over 30 traditional board games that were and are popular across the geographical regions of the country albeit in variations.

This edition of Kreedaa Kaushalya features seven new games: Taabla, 28-sepoys, Huli Kallu, Basavana Aata, Daya Kattam, Immadi Huli Kattu and 12-Men’s Morris. A printed set of rules, easy to comprehend is given with each board game.

Kreedaa Kaushalya’s board games set of counters, boards and dice have been designed at the design wing of Ramsons Kala Pratishtana. Embroidered silk of Ahmedabad to Saharanpur’s inlaid wood, from the brightly painted Jaipur wood to honey coloured teak of Aliguli Mane – a bewildering variety of media have been used to create game boards while the game counters are in brightly coloured wood. The tiny birds, tigers and goats carved out of softwood and exquisitely painted are eye-catching. Chess sets in onyx and inlay and the classic Chaturanga or four-handed chess are also on display.

Kreedaa Kaushalya is the celebration of a heritage that encompassed rural and urban societies with ease. The Kreedaa Kaushalya research team of Raghu Dharmendra and Dr. C.R. Dileep Kumar Gowda (a medical professional) led by R.G. Singh have made extensive field work across the country collecting board games memorabilia, documenting popular games and finally published a well-documented and illustrated monograph on traditional board games. This book was released at the 19th International Board Game Studies Colloquium that was held at Nuremberg, Germany in April 2016. This monograph is available for sale at the venue.

Kreedaa Kaushalya has a special ‘games parlour’ a section set aside for those interested in playing a game or two, without losing his or her kingdom! Come, roll the dice.

Inauguration: 27-04-2017, Thursday. 11 a.m.
