Art and a cause come together with JagaChitra

JagaChitra is an annual photography exhibition, conducted by TGiS.

A city-based photography group, Thank God it’s Saturday (TGiS), is unveiling a new collection of photographs shot by its members. The group is hosting its 5th exhibition this year at Chitrakala Parishath (CKP). The exhibition will be for a span of six days, flagging off from 1stJune, 2017. All proceeds from the exhibition will be donated to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI).

About JagaChitra
TGiS consists mostly of members who have attended photography workshops headed by internationally celebrated photographer, Mr. Anand Sharan. The group conducts yearly exhibitions and this year, the theme is “JagaChitra” which literally means ‘universe taken as a picture’ and also ‘wonder of the universe’. With 500 submissions made this year, 110 have been shortlisted for exhibiting at CKP.

In keeping with the theme, photographs were taken by TGiS members from around the world, showcasing scenic locales, culture, wildlife, nature, and people. Apart from India, visitors to the exhibition will see images from Bruges, the Swiss Alps, Arizona, Krabi Islands, London, Cambodia, Angkor and more. Visitors will be able to purchase the framed photographs, which are printed on special archival paper – quality that lasts for more than 40 years.

“TGiS is highly active in the city today, where the group meets at least twice in a month to enhance photography skills. Every member of this group works enthusiastically towards making this exhibition a success every year. We look to conduct events like these in future and would encourage our members to make their hobby as a full-time profession as well,” says Girish M, Mentor, TGiS

About MSSI
Every year, TGiS is associated with an NGO and raises funds for them. The first two years of the exhibition, the funds were donated to an eye-hospital and Rotary Club respectively.

Since 2015, TGiS has been associated with Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI). Last year through the exhibition, TGiS was able to generate Rs 7 lakhs with a sale of 100 frames. The amount was donated to the MSSI Bangalore Chapter for the welfare and treatment of its patients. For 2017, TGiS is again proud to be associated with MSSI and hopes to raise more funds this year. Buyers will receive receipts that are considered donations and therefore can be used for tax rebates.

“TGiS is proud to be associated with MSSI Bangalore Chapter. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. With the exhibition, TGiSwas able to generate a substantial amount which could be used for patients below the poverty line and their treatments”, says Shankar Subramanian, Secretary of MSSI, Bangalore and Founder ofTGiS.

“I’ve been coming to MSSI for support for a few years and it really helps that they facilitate interactions with the top neurologists in the city . MSSI arranges a physiotherapist to visit me weekly and I’m grateful that the TGiS group has decided to help those of us who are affected by MS”, says Priya
