July 19, 2017

The Bangalore School of Music in association with Indiranagar Restopub, Take 5 is organising Jazz drum workshop for young drummers

Drumming Up a Storm – Drums Workshop

Pick up Latin Jazz styles of Samba, Bossanova, and other funk and swing styles that have caught the imagination of drummers worldwide. The workshop will be conducted by ace drummer-percussionist William D’Souza from Goa, who has played in Remo Fernandes’ band and who has over 3 decades of experience in performing, innovating and perfecting drums and other percussion instruments.

Mozambique-born William D’Souza grew up in Goa and started playing the drums at the tender age of eight. At the age of thirteen, he won his first state-level beat competition. While in college, William played with various Goa-based bands and then went to Europe to formally study western drums, and even played with bands in some big Festivals. On his return to India, he joined the Karnataka College of Percussion, Bangalore and in the year 1987, was awarded the ‘Best Drummer in Goa’ by Goa Today magazine. From then on, William started experimenting with various jazz bands around the country using Carnatic rythms and in the year 1993, joined Bangalore-based band, ‘Gerard Machado’s Jazz Network’. In 1994, William released an album called ‘Spectrum’ in 1994, and since then has played with a number of bands in various Festivals both in India and around the world.

William, whose philosophy is that everyone has an innate sense of rhythm and that rhythm can be found on any surface, also conducts workshops on creative awareness using kitchen utensils and other objects we encounter in daily life. These can be watched on as ‘williamdrums’.

William is now in Bangalore to share his knowledge and mentor young drummers.
