“Layers” – Art show
by Padmaja Chandrashekhar
Presented by
Aarasa

Padmaja’s statement about Layers-

Layers.
We build some, we shed some.
They provide refuge when asked, lightness when ignored.
They define our core or mask it.
They are our triumphs and our tragedies.
Trophies and scars from a myriad experiences.
We discard some while others refuse to leave.
Which layers will you hold on to today?
And which ones will you let go?

Layers.
Explorations in constructing and de-constructing the fragments that make us whole.

Padmaja Chandrasekhar received her BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art, Baltimore, where she was the first recipient of the David Jacobs Scholarship for international students. While in college, she was partial to experiments in monoprinting as a medium, influenced by the lyricism of Joan Miro, the intensity of Georgia O’Keeffe and the vibrancy of Paul Gaugain.

On her return to Bangalore in 1992, she applied her artistic training to the creation of distinctive ad campaigns for leading agencies and small boutique firms. Her work over 25 years is marked by the marriage of keen visual instincts with memorable commercial impact.

Abstract Nature themes in pastels formed a large part of her expressions at her home studio until four years ago, when it expanded to include an intense exploration of printmaking. This is when her current body of work; Layers, was born.

This series is testimony to infinite evolution …the unending changes that make us whole. Layers involves constructing paintings and then deconstructing them. Reflecting the instinctive human inclination to constantly add or shed layers, cover up or strip bare, these collages are created by breaking down the whole into parts and then reassembling them into a new entity.

Monoprinting lent itself with natural ease to this idea of creating layers within layers.

Padmaja likens her journey to being stripped to the bone, an immersive experience further enhanced by her spiritual journey with Sadhguru.

A part of the proceeds will go to Deutsche Cleft ABMSS, an NGO which aims at bringing smile to children with cleft lip and palate.
