There is a Noise. A Norwegian Play.

September 10, 2018

Ranga Shankara presents “There is a Noise” A play from Norway for young adults by HESTNES / POPOVIĆ

Developed and performed by Freya Sif Hestnes and Marina Popovic
Sound design by Marianna Sangita Roe
Developed with support from Norwegian Theatre Academy. Foundation Fritt Ord.

From the diary of a 16-year-old grandmother in 1945 to the narrative of escaping war as a child, this piece investigates memory. The audience is invited to sit around a table while stories unfold around them in the midst of frying waffle ooze. We look at the blurry line between facts, memories and emotions of experiencing war as a child and raise the question of how to retell such a complexity. Rather than offering a clear narrative or a story, the piece recreates the confusion and unease of carrying such a story with you and the difficulty of sharing it.

By approaching memory that strongly diverges from the collective memory of the Norwegian society, we are investigating privilege and responsibility. Through sensory means such as food and sound, we are offering the audience to immerge in the topic together with us. We believe we have approached a heavy and often hard to grasp theme with humor and a sensibility that is inviting the audience in to a sensorial experience, rather then rationalization
